Our School Emblem

The Lakatoi crab claw-shaped sails hold significant cultural and historical significance in Papua New Guinea. The Lakatoi is a traditional sailing vessel used by the Motu people of the Papuan Gulf region. The unique feature of the Lakatoi is its sail design, which resembles a crab claw.

The crab claw-shaped sail is ingeniously crafted to take advantage of the prevailing trade winds in the region. It allows the Lakatoi to sail efficiently in various directions, including tacking against the wind, which is not possible with conventional square sails. This design innovation enabled the Motu people to engage in long-distance trade and exploration across the islands and coastal areas.

Thus the Lakatoi crab claw-shaped sail in the POMIS emblem embodies the essence of unity, community development, and active service. It pays homage to the rich maritime heritage and cultural identity of Papua New Guinea. It further reinforces the themes of exploration, unity, and community development, as it represents a traditional vessel that once brought diverse communities together through trade, exchange, and shared experiences on the open seas.

If you look at the blue of the sail you can make out a frigate bird flying to the left. This is a connection to our former logo, 1960-1993.
